Gerrard Butler claims more than 100 horses given steroids

A second Newmarket trainer admitted using anabolic steroids on his horses. Gerard Butler has told the BHA that several of his horses received treatment consisting of injections of anabolic steroids for injured joints.

The trainer believes more than 100 racehorses across Newmarket may have been given the same treatment.

Butler said the treatment came recommended by vets and included the injections in his official medical records which were seen and returned by the BHA without comment.

"It did not cross my mind that there could be any problem with this medication. And, judging from the fact that the BHA said nothing about it when they saw my medical book, it does not seem to have crossed their minds, either."

Butler believes the medication, known as Sungate and containing the steroid stanozolol, to have been commonly recommended by vets in Newmarket for the treatment of joint injuries.

Mahmood Al Zarooni banned for eight years

Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni was on Thursday banned for eight years by the disciplinary panel at the BHA's headquarters after being found guilty of doping offences which have rocked British racing.

The 15 horses Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni has admitted doping with anabolic steroids have been banned from racing for six months.

The length of suspension reflects the period beyond which the BHA is confident that the horses in question can have derived no performance related benefit from the administration of these prohibited substances.
Sheikh Mohammed has announced he is to lock down the Newmarket stable occupied by Mahmood Al Zarooni with immediate effect in the wake of revelations at least 15 of the horses based at the yard were administered anabolic steroids.
He has also demanded a full round of blood samples and dope testing is done on every single horse in the yard - which includes last year's St Leger winner Encke - in a bid to try and restore public faith in the Godolphin operation.

BOG Bookmakers or Betfair?

As a person who seldom uses the betting exchanges opting for the peace of mind that betting with BOG Bookmakers gives, I find myself now having to get up to speed with Betfair. With so many bookmakers restricting my bets a total switch to the exchanges looks inevitable.

Working on a new strategy outlined in previous posts where I am looking to put in a place order on Betfair at a predefined fraction of the opening show win odds achieved with a BOG bookmaker has astounded me.

I initially started with place bet orders at ¼ of the win odds which where all matched very early. The following day I adjusted this to 2/7th believing that 1/3 would be over optimistic and monitored the fluctuations throughout the day only to find even at a 1/3 of the odds I would be matched. In some cases I would have been disappointed to have set the bar at 1/3.

Case in point: Our sole selection yesterdays Nine Iron with an opening show of 4-1 was matched at 2-1 to be placed on the Betfair place market. This may well be an exception and for the immediate future I will continue at 1/3 with a proviso of taking SP if my order is filled at the off.

While trawling through the internet researching last night I tripped across a strategy that was termed as being an ATM for the Betfair Markets with claims that using the strategy could deliver $50 - $100 a day for those able to spend time on the in-running markets. I would like to make it clear that in no way am I endorsing the product as I am yet to use it after paying £87 last night but, if anyone is interested in a copy for a nominal fee drop me an email to theactuary@ymail.com.

Mahmood Al Zarooni faces the loss of his licence

Mahmood Al Zarooni  faces the loss of his licence after admitting being in breach of the rules of racing following  anabolic steroids being found in samples taken from several of his horses including top-class filly Certify who will not now be allowed to run in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas.

Following a BHA inspection of Al Zarooni's stables in Newmarket traces of prohibited substances were discovered in 11 of 45 horses tested.

Desert Blossom, Certify, Fair Hill, Ghostflower, Orkney Island, Sweet Rose and Valley Of Queens tested positive for ethylestranol and Artigiano, Bathrat Amal, Opinion Poll and Restraint Of Trade tested positive for stanozolol.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed was absolutely appalled when he was told and this is completely unacceptable to him. Godolphin said it would will await the outcome of the BHA inquiry before taking any further internal action.

Al Zarooni said: "I deeply regret what has happened. I have made a catastrophic error. Because the horses involved were not racing at the time, I did not realise that what I was doing was in breach of the rules of racing. I can only apologise for the damage this will cause to Godolphin and to racing generally."

A disciplinary panel enquiry into the analysts' findings will take place at the first available opportunity. The horses which have produced positive tests will also not be permitted to race with immediate effect and for an extended period of time.

40-1 boil-over in Wolverhampton opener

There was little to be gleaned on the backing exercise discussed in my post ‘Excellent Puck at a reasonable price!‘ on Saturday’s Wolverhampton card.  With two boil-overs in four of the races of interest to subscribers: Magical Speedfit 40-1 taking the opener and Idol Deputy 20-1 in the 8:45, the one thing that was immediately evident from the exercise was under-cooking my Betfair orders.

No surprise that there was insufficient liquidity in the place markets at the overnight stage to have any of my orders matched but I was surprised to find them matched early morning (Pre 07:00 a.m.)  having gone in at ¼ of the BOG win odds.

This proved costly in the case of Going French who placed at 16-1 after drifting from an overnight price of 11-1. I appreciate this will never be an exact science but having been matched so early would suggest that perhaps we should set the bar higher than ¼ of the BOG win odds.

I am sure that putting an order in at 1/3 of the BOG win price will be over optimistic so I will aim for a happy medium of 2/7 on tomorrow’s selections.

Excellent Puck at a reasonable price!

“Those that Hobgoblin call you and sweet Puck, You do their work, and they shall have good luck”

Although I wouldn't view yesterday success by 2 point selection Excellent Puck as luck, with no fewer than 26 placed selections in the past month in among the winners it was extremely rewarding, in every way to see Excellent Puck (advised overnight at 7-1) romped to victory beating 2-1 favourite Mizyen with consummate ease. The earlier success of our first selection on the card Requested (advised at 2-1) assisted in adding 16 points to the bank, a welcome shot in the arm for Aprils figures.

I am not usually an advocate of E.W. or Place betting but outside of the months winners we have suffered only 16 horses unplaced and the maths would suggest that we can gain greater stability and profit by doubling our betting stake and splitting it with half on the win and half on the place.

Unfortunately, it is neigh on impossible to get a retrospective view of place payouts so I will endeavor to make you aware of the pro’s and cons in real-time starting with Wolverhampton's meeting  tomorrow evening.

My intention will be to continue to place the win bet with a BOG and put in an order at a quarter of the win odds on Betfair to the same stake unless better is already available with ‘Take SP’ At In Play.

A Different Standard Of Racing – Southwell

I had always made the assumption that the role of The Clerk of the Course, at any racecourse, was to maintain the racing surface to as close as possible to the norm. In the case of a turf course this would be 'good', on an all weather course 'standard'.

Yesterday, I was left asking myself, after returning the times from Southwell, why no attempt was made to water the track to bring it closer to standard.

I appreciate that after the winter flooding Roderick Duncan might be sick of the sight of water and after re-opening in early February the times returned suggested business as usual. Whereas the times being returned since the 2nd March 2013 would suggest a gradual deterioration of the racing surface to the degree that if Southwell all weather course was a turf track the meetings would have been abandoned.

I would exercise some caution and be very skeptical of the form lines coming from Southwell over the last month unless the horses that have prevailed were to be facing bottomless ground. Or perhaps we are looking at a new standard of racing at Southwell.
